In considering the viability of a four-door model, the company had hired Italian
designer Sergio Farina at Carrozzeria Pininfarina to come up with an idea, code-
named 911/B17. It looked swollen and bilious in its psychedelic green paint, and

The GTO story really begins in 1961. By the end of the 1950s, the 250 GT SWB
had evolved from the 250 GT LWB (Tour De France cars) into the standard-
bearer for GT racing cars. In 1961, a pair of prototypes (2643 GT & 2053 GT)
were being prepared for the 1962 GT racing season. 2643 came to be known as '
The Pininfarina Prototype GTO,' and it was built for the 1961 Le Mans race where
it competed as a works-supported 'Sperimentale.' An obvious styling cue from the
250 GT0.
