(1) Granular painting surfaces— like sandpaper, let's say— are often intriguing to
paint on. A simple way to prepare a sandy surface is to coat the smooth side of a
sheet of hardboard with acrylic medium (matt or gloss) and sprinkle sand onto the
surface before the medium dries. Here's how you do it. Coat about a square foot

A smooth surface is the most important factor whether you plan to stain or paint. If
needed, sand the piece to remove rough edges. Fill nail and staple holes with
wood putty, let dry, and sand smooth. If you plan to stainthe piece, this is done
after the decorative painting. Use an electric palm sander to remove as much of
the putty as possible. If the piece is pine, apply a pre-stain solution before
painting the design. Pine is a soft wood and takes stain differently from most other
woods.

Sand-Painting. Strategies. My wife and I were hired to restore and repaint the roof
trim and the 60 windows of the Squire House, which is in the National Register.
To re-create the sand- paint finish, we had to develop a few techniques and tools.
Our number-one problem was finding a good source of white, dry, dust-free sand.
By calling the company that bags and sells fine white sand for mixing with paint (
to produce anti-slip surfaces), we were able to track down the Smith Chemical ...

MAKING ADDITIONS TO MIXES Adding texture to your work can introduce
unusual and striking effects. Try mixing additional material into the paint, such as
sand, sawdust, or chalk. Alternatively, press coarse fabric onto the canvas to
leave textured imprints. You can then paint on top of the resulting textures to
incorporate them into your finished painting. □□ Materials and effects Additions
can create texture or alter the quality of the paint. Whenever you add a substance
