in retrospect I can see that it shaped all that I have done since then, because it
was an important reminder that anthropology should properly serve the people
being studied, and not simply the anthropologist's career. The irony in this is that
when I first met Len at the American Anthropological Association meetings in
1971 I was fairly dismissive of the anthropologists of his generation for having
